Starting from the only drawing we have

The special molding clay base is prepared

and the outline is sketched out

The artist then begins to carve away at the block revealing the coat of arms elements

Further details are added, and then the block is fired

After firing a mold is made and the terracotta clay positive is made. This is then fired and cured to make the final product.

Starting from the photos of a small piece of jewelry...

A pre-shaped block is made for just the face portion

From which the female face is "roughed out"

And then patiently refined

It is then attached to the base, which is furthered decorated

And the piece is ready for the mold

From the mold a second clay duplicate is made which is then fired to make the final product

The original art work for "The General" to be replicated on white marble

The drawing is replicated on the selected stone slab which has been cut to size and pre-finished

Using hand tools the shape is slowly carved out. It is painstaking work with no room for error.

At the half way stage "the General" begins to appear

The final piece is ready for its new home. We have also "aged" many of our pieces for a more antique look

THE CREATION OF CUSTOM MEDALLIONS

CASE STUDY

A client asked us for a series of medallions. Originally they were all to be in terracotta but then we suggested that some would look better in sculpted stone. Over the next photos you will see the whole process. All we had to start with were photocopies of photocopies....
