They were refering to Nat Owing's (of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill fame) A-frame house perched 600ft up on Big Sur's dramatic coastline. Originally built in 1958 the same Time Article decribed the problems Owing had to oconsider and overcome - "The land is periodically shaken by earthquakes, battered by 80-m.p.h. winds; rainfall can total 72 in. in three months, and termites abound". Following his widow Margaret's death the house was bought and underwent extensive restoration. We started working on this project with the architect that was looking for windows and doors that would have the special look for this unique house and the technical qualities to resist in such harsh environment. The custom made Bronze (burnished brass) units ended up being the right fit.
