STONE MATERIALS

When classifying natural stone two categories stand out: Calcareous Stone, primarily made of Calcium Carbonate (Limestone, Travertine, Marble and Onyx) and Silaceous Stone, primarily made of Silica (Sandstone, Slate, Quartzite, Granite, Basalt, Soapstone). However you can also categorize stone by how it is formed - Sedimentary stone is formed by layers of organisms and other sediments carried by glaciers and rivers into lakes and oceans. Examples are Travertine, Sandstone and Limestone. Igneous stone start their life as lava. Huge heat and pressure gives it its chemistry, but the rate of cooling gives it its texture, large or fine grain. Basalt and Granite are igneous stones. The third category is Metamorphic stone. They may start their life as Sedimentary or Igneous (or a simpler Metamorphic stone) but regardless of how it starts it is then subject to huge heat, pressure and time which modifies and compacts the crystals into new formations. Marble, Slate, Quartzite and Soapstones and Metamorphic stones.

COORITALIA supplies all natural stone but we specialize in Limestone, Travertine, Onyx and Marbles. We have the know-how to guide you in matching performance with aesthetics.
